The sequel to Avatar is finally, officially, and entirely done before to its debut in theaters VERY, VERY soon, thus we will soon understand the significance of The Way of Water.
Late in November, Jon Landau, the film’s producer, announced the good news, less than a month before the film’s premiere. Fans have waited 13 years, but the moment has almost arrived to return to Pandora.
As hinted at in both the first teaser and the main trailer, the sequel to James Cameron’s record-breaking film will return spectators to the planet Pandora and is certain to be aesthetically beautiful.
Cameron intends for the sequel to launch a series of films released every other year until Avatar 5 in December 2028. However, he has hinted that the series would finish with Avatar 3 if The Way of Water underperforms.
However, before we get too excited, here is all you need to know about Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar 2 release date: When will Avatar The Way of Water be out in cinemas?
Due to the continuing global health crisis, the release date of Avatar 2 has been delayed from December 2021 to December 2022.
The shooting of the sequel began in 2017, although considering the film’s combination of live-action and motion capture, this is not surprising.
We also know that the film’s running duration will be 190 minutes, or three hours and ten minutes. Cameron has justified the length of the film by stating that “there are more characters to serve.”
Cameron has been working on all three upcoming films for the last several years, given the possibility of their existence. Due to the youthful cast, he claimed he has already recorded portions of Avatar 4 in December 2021.
“Anything that required a certain actor, we shot all the sequences for 2 and 3 – and a little of 4 – simultaneously,” he told Variety.
“I had to shoot out the children. They are permitted to age six years in the midst of the plot on page 25 of the fourth film. Therefore, I required the completion of all tasks before to that time, and we will do the remaining tasks thereafter.”

Avatar 2 is expected to double the opening of the previous film in the United States, with a projected debut of between $150 million and $175 million in the United States alone.

The teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water debuted at CinemaCon and was exclusively screened in theaters alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness prior to its online release in May.

We had to wait until November for the main trailer, which revealed further details about the premise of the sequel and the possibility of a war on Pandora.
Avatar 2 title: Say hello to Avatar The Way of Water
As previously stated, the official title of Avatar 2 is now Avatar: The Way of Water.
Interestingly, BBC News claimed in November 2018 that the four sequels to Avatar would be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.
Cameron subsequently stated that these are probable names, and because the first one was accurate, it is possible that they will also be the titles of the next three films.
Avatar 2 cast: Who’s back in Avatar The Way of Water?
Zoe Saldaa will return as the Na’vi princess Neytiri, while Sam Worthington will reprise his role as the human-turned-Na’vi Jake Sully.
Stephen Lang returns as the deceased Colonel Miles Quaritch, who will serve as the primary antagonist in all four films. Lang validated a fan hypothesis on his reappearance in July 2022 by stating that Quaritch is now “larger, bluer, and angrier.”
Uh-oh.
In the sequel, Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Na’vi adolescent Kiri, the adopted daughter of Neytiri and Jake.
Kate Winslet portrays Ronal in all Avatar sequels, marking her first cooperation with James Cameron since 1997’s smash Titanic. The Metkayina clan’s co-leader, Ronal, is “very loyal and courageous.”
CCH Pounder will resume her role as Mo’at, Neytiri’s mother, and Matt Gerald will repeat his part as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, while Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) will portray the new character General Ardmore.
The sequel will add a new Na’vi clan named the Metkayina, lead by Fear the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis as Tonowari and including Bailey Bass’s Reya and Duane Evans Jr.’s Rotxo.
Jake and Neytiri have Na’vi children in the sequel, including Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). Jack Champion portrays the adopted human youngster Miles Socorro, also known as Spider.
It seemed that Fast & Furious actor Vin Diesel would also feature in the sequel, but it now seems that he may appear in the third installment instead.
Cameron describes Jemaine Clement’s marine scientist role, Dr. Ian Garvin, as “one of my favorite characters” in the sequel.
Initial uncertainty surrounded the casting of David Thewlis from Harry Potter in the sequel. It turns out that he will appear in Avatar 3 (and 4 and 5) but not in Avatar 2. Phew!
Avatar 2 plot: What will Avatar The Way of Water be about?
Along with the title announcement, we received the first official summary, which verified many of our suspicions.
It states: “Jake Sully lives on the planet Pandora with his newfound family. Jake must collaborate with Neytiri and the Na’vi army to defend their world as a familiar foe reappears to complete what it had previously begun.”
We also know that, despite the fact that there will be three sequels after this one, each film will be a stand-alone tale, as Landau said that “the trip through all four films will build a linked epic.”
The RDA mining operation will return to Pandora, prompting Jake to move his family to the “perceived safe harbor” on the reef, where they encounter the Metkayina. To accurately convey the significance of water, Avatar 2’s motion-capture sequences were shot underwater.
We also know that Baby Driver’s CJ Jones, a deaf actor contracted to establish a “new Na’vi sign language,” devised a custom sign language for the movie.
Avatar 2 delays: Why has it taken so long?
Here is the whole account of the sequel’s protracted trip to the big screen.
Avatar 2 was scheduled to begin shooting in April 2016, however April came and went without production commencing. In January of the following year, it was stated that production on the film’s motion-capture section would begin in August 2017, although it did not begin until September.
The announcement of a fourth Avatar film pushed everything back, and then everything was pushed back one more, with Avatar 2 now scheduled for December 2017. (and the rest set for 2018 and 2019 presumably). Cameron attributed the delays to the “very complicated” writing process.
The January 2017 postponement of Avatar 2 was attributed to the shift of Star Wars: The Last Jedi from May to December of the same year.
The release date for the sequel was originally slated for December 2020, but Disney pushed it back to December 2021 after acquiring Fox, bringing us to the present and the COVID-related delays that have affected the whole industry.
Cameron remained cool in 2017 over the delays. Nonetheless, in a recent interview, he acknowledged having reservations. Those fears, however, seem to be unjustified so far.
Cameron said to The New York Times: “With Avatar 2 coming out 12 years later, I was afraid that I had stretched the cord too far in our fast-paced, contemporary society. Within twenty-four hours after releasing the teaser video, we received 148 million views.”
Whether this converts into bums on seats, though, is an age-old conundrum.
