Ghana defeated South Korea 3-2 in Doha’s Education City Stadium on Monday, reviving their chances of advancing to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup thanks to a pair of goals from Mohammed Kudus.
“It was the first time in FIFA World Cup history that a team like Ghana qualified for the knockout rounds,” the coach stated. “The squad has been able to achieve success over the last two years, but it won’t be simple this time. “It’s fortunate that we won’t be able to participate in the World Cup,” he remarked. “We will not be able to participate in the World Cup,” he continued.
Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus scored the second goal to give the Black Stars their first 2-0 halftime advantage. Cho Gue-sung gave South Korea hope with a pair of goals in the 58th and 61st minutes, however Kudus scored to restore Ghana’s advantage (68th).
Son Heung-min and his teammates started attacking the Uruguayan goal in the first few minutes of a vibrant but futile contest for South Korea. Despite winning six corners in twenty minutes, the South Koreans were unable to score against the Black Stars’ defense, which was not encouraging.
The Ghanaians ultimately capitalized on their second set piece against the flow of play to open the score.
Salisu capitalized on a Jordan Ayew free-kick to give Ghana the lead following a weak clearance by Napoli defender Kim Min-jae (24th). Andre Ayew was accused of having committed a handball, but the referee did not disallow the goal.
Ayew’s younger brother Jordan capitalized on his coach’s faith by setting up a second free-kick that was headed in by the outstanding Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Kudus (34′).
However, during the intermission, the Taeguk Warriors shown remarkable mental fortitude. In the second half, the Taeguk Warriors showed exceptional mental fortitude, as Cho of Jeonbuk Motors was favored over former Bordeaux player Hwang Ui-jo, who was unsuccessful against Uruguay (0-0), and scored a pair of goals in the 58th and 61st minutes.
Then, Kudus finished off the South Koreans with his second goal of the match, a left-footed shot (68th). He allowed his squad to hope for a spot in the last 16.
It’s a fantastic way to come back into the game,” he remarked, “but it’s not the only option.
