Mitch Duke’s header in the middle of the first half gave Australia the lead, and the team went on to win their first match in the world’s largest football tournament since beating Serbia in 2010.
Australia still has a chance to advance to the round of 16, after losing their first match 4-1 to reigning champion France.
Wednesday’s last round of group games features Tunisia vs France and Australia versus Denmark.
